Class 8 Truck Launch Targeted by Startup Merger Partners for 2027

ElectraMeccanica and Tevva, companies in the process of merging, have ambitious plans to introduce a Class 8 hybrid electric and hydrogen-powered truck in the United States by 2027, according to ElectraMeccanica CEO Susan Docherty.

This 19-ton (42,560-pound) truck will be manufactured in Mesa, Arizona, utilizing an existing 235,000-square-foot ElectraMeccanica facility and will be an evolution of Tevva’s current 7.5-ton truck.

Tevva has already initiated deliveries of its 7.5-ton battery-electric truck in the UK, and the larger model will incorporate three hydrogen tanks to extend its range.

For the glider trucks, the partners are searching for American suppliers of cabs and chassis, with Docherty noting a substantial pool of potential candidates.

Docherty also highlighted the growth in component and hydrogen suppliers, with Arizona attracting numerous suppliers, and she anticipates a more mature hydrogen market when ElectraMeccanica’s dual-fuel trucks hit the market.

Before the 19-ton truck’s US launch, the partners plan to commence deliveries in the UK and continental Europe in late 2026.

Manufacturing of the 7.5-ton truck in the US is scheduled to begin in late 2025 or 2026. The merger is anticipated to close in the fourth quarter of 2023, with the merged entity operating as Tevva Inc. and being listed on NASDAQ. ElectraMeccanica shareholders will hold a 23.5% stake in the combined company, while Tevva shareholders will hold 76.5%.
